Roseman University to launch Nevada’s first nursing anesthetists program this summer

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The first-of-its-kind program in Nevada to train Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists will launch this July at Roseman University in the Las Vegas valley.

Until now there were no nurse anesthetist schools or programs in the state for a field that is expected to grow by nearly 38% over the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Dr. Brian C. Oxhorn, the Dean of the College of Nursing at Roseman University, is a born and raised Nevadan and knows the critical need for medical professionals throughout the state. He saw that the need for anesthetic providers to be among one of those.

“This community in particular has experienced a significant shortage of anesthetic providers over the past few years very detrimental,” Oxhorn explained, telling 8 News Now that he is excited about the launch of their new program. “We are the first in Nevada and one of the few in the western region so we’re very excited about this.”

The major difference between an anesthesiologist and a nurse anesthetist is education. An anesthesiologist is a physician who provides anesthesia for patients undergoing surgery and also diagnoses and treats pain. A nurse anesthetist also provides a variety of anesthesia and pain medicine services while working in a team of physicians.

They can also work independently. A physician goes to medical school while a nurse gets a bachelor’s degree and then goes to an accredited graduate school of nurse anesthesia.

Roseman University is now an accredited school of nurse anesthetists by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.

The need for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists is increasing because of the increase in the number of surgeries across the country and an aging population. The shortage of these professionals can delay surgeries and result in longer wait times for other procedures.

Now nursing students at Roseman University will have the opportunity to further their career with this doctoral program that will teach them how to administer anesthesia. Upon completion of this new program, the students will earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice and will then need to apply for licensure. It’s also one of the highest-paid nursing specialties with an average pay of about $200,000 a year according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Roseman University is accepting applicants for the first inaugural class which is expected to start in July of 2024. The three-year program is open to current nursing who can apply through their website.
